Leash training is an essential part of dog training, as it allows you to have control over your dog when taking them for a walk or out in public. Here are some steps to follow when leash training your dog:
Choose the right leash and collar: Start by choosing a comfortable collar and leash that fits your dog properly. A flat collar or a martingale collar is a good choice, and the leash should be sturdy and at least 6 feet long.
Introduce the collar and leash: Before you start walking your dog on a leash, let them get used to wearing the collar and leash. Attach the leash to the collar and let your dog wear it around the house for short periods of time. This will help your dog to become comfortable with the collar and leash and reduce any anxiety.
Start walking: Once your dog is comfortable wearing the collar and leash, you can start walking them indoors. Use treats and positive reinforcement to encourage your dog to follow you while on the leash.
Correct pulling behavior: When your dog pulls on the leash, stop walking and stand still until your dog stops pulling. Reward your dog with treats when they stop pulling and start walking with you again.
Increase the distance and distractions: Once your dog is comfortable walking on a leash indoors, start walking them outdoors. Start in a quiet area with few distractions and gradually increase the distance and distractions as your dog becomes more comfortable.
Practice, practice, practice: Leash training takes time and patience. Practice with your dog regularly and reward them for good behavior. Over time, your dog will learn to enjoy walks on the leash and will become a well-behaved walking companion.
